1-on-1 Coaching and Consulting

YOUR GAME

You shouldn't have to guess what's holding your game back.

Are you good enough? What are you missing? Why aren't you getting more ice time? What do coaches and scouts see when they watch you? What do you need to do to reach the next level?

Chris helps you answer those questions.

In a live 60-minute session, you'll watch your shifts together and break down the decisions, habits and details shaping your game. Drawing on nearly a decade of OHL experience, Chris gives you an honest perspective on what you're doing well, what's holding you back and what you need to improve. From there, you'll receive a detailed development plan outlining the areas to focus on and the process for improving them.

But this goes beyond video analysis. Chris teaches you how to process information, recognize patterns, anticipate what happens next, manipulate the play, solve problems and consistently make better decisions in real time.

You'll leave with a clearer understanding of your game and practical strategies you can apply directly into your next practice and game.

Whalen Development Lab

YOUR EDGE

You don't need to watch more hockey. You need to watch the right hockey.

The Whalen Development Lab is NHL hockey, filtered through the eyes of someone who has spent nearly a decade evaluating players at the highest levels.

Every week during the NHL season, Chris watches, filters and breaks down 15 to 20 clips that young players need to see. Every clip is voiced over and built around a concept that can directly translate to your game, from processing information to problem-solving, manipulating defenders, puck-battle strategy and creating offense.

The Lab doesn't just show you what happened. Chris explains why it worked and how you can apply the same concepts to your own game.

You don't have to spend hours watching games or scrolling through highlights trying to figure out what matters. In about 30 minutes a week, you can work through the clips Chris has already filtered and learn the concepts and strategies that can help you become a more intelligent, adaptable and effective player.

With 900+ clips already in the database and more added every week during the NHL season, the Lab is a constantly growing resource you can return to throughout your development. There are hundreds of situations and concepts to study.

See what Chris sees. Learn what scouts look for. Become the player they want to bet on.

Whales' Whiteboard

The Why

See the game beyond the story.

Most hockey coverage tells you what happened. Whales’ Whiteboard asks why.

Every article is built from hours of video research, using curated film and detailed analysis to uncover the decisions, habits, tactics and patterns that actually shape the game. From NHL players and prospects to team systems and emerging trends, Chris Whalen brings a front-office perspective to the details that often get missed.

The analysis doesn't always follow the consensus. When the tape tells a different story, Chris isn't afraid to challenge the narrative. Every conclusion is backed by research and video evidence, showing you exactly why he sees the game differently.

Watch the video. Challenge the narrative. See hockey differently.

The Whalen Philosophy

Potential Isn't a Ceiling

I don't believe a player's potential is fixed. Players are shaped by their habits, attributes, environment and, most importantly, their willingness to improve.

My job isn't simply to maximize what a player already has. It's to identify what can be developed, challenge the habits that are holding them back and help them build new ones. With the right work and a willingness to improve, we can change a player's perceived limitations and expand what they are capable of becoming.

What Makes Players Successful

At the highest levels, talent alone isn't enough. I look for players who can think the game, compete and consistently find ways to impact the game.

Hockey IQ is at the center of that. It's reading the play, processing information, recognizing patterns, anticipating what comes next and understanding the options available in real time. The best players don't just react to the game. They see it developing and influence what happens next.

Compete is also a skill. Winning puck battles, fighting for inside position, playing with urgency and finding ways to impact the game when things aren't going your way are traits that translate at every level.

I also look beyond the outcome. A goal, assist or highlight can tell you what happened. It doesn't always tell you why it happened. I want to understand the decisions, habits and actions underneath the play because those are what ultimately determine whether a player's game will translate as the level gets higher.

And development doesn't stop when the game ends. Training, recovery, preparation, nutrition, discipline and the habits a player builds when nobody is watching all contribute to becoming the player they want to be.

How I Work With Players

Every player is different. They have different personalities, motivations, strengths, challenges and ways of learning. You cannot bring out the best in a player without first understanding the person.

Development starts with a genuine relationship built on trust. Players need honest feedback, but they also need someone who believes in them, understands how they respond to coaching and knows how to challenge them in a way that brings out their best.

My goal is to help players become better decision-makers. That means teaching them how to read the game, recognize problems, understand their options and make better decisions in real time. The more a player understands the game, the more confidently they can solve problems and adapt to whatever the game throws at them.

I want players to leave every conversation with a clearer understanding of their game, greater confidence in their abilities and something they can take directly into their next practice or game.
